The Jewish Obituaries in the "Gentleman's Magazine"

Albert M. Hyamson

<plain_text><page sequence="1">The Jewish Obituaries in the Gentleman's Magazine By Albert M. Hyamson The following index of obituaries, published in the Gentleman s Magazine from the first appearance of that periodical in 1731 until 1868 when the character of the Magazine was completely changed and the publication of obituary notices ceased, covers a considerable field. The term " Jew " is interpreted in the widest sense to include not only members of the Jewish community but also men and women of Jewish parentage and of half Jewish parentage. In a few instances the index even goes outside of this wide definition, for a few persons of more remote Jewish ancestry have been included as well as a very few proselytes and wives of men qualified for inclusion in the list. The rule to give oneself the benefit of the doubt has also been adopted. That is to say that a person whose Jewish origin is a matter of doubt has nevertheless been included.1 As a consequence some of the following entries should after further research be rejected as unsuitable for inclusion in a dictionary of Anglo-Jewish biography, or even a list of Jews. Unjustified inclusion is, however, considered preferable to unwarranted exclusion. In this instance the sin of commission is less serious than that of omission. Many of these obituaries contain nothing but the barest of facts, and in most instances these facts, such as age, have been transcribed. In other instances, however, biographies of greater or less length are given. These are indicated in the following list by daggers (f). The page of the Magazine on which the obituary appears is always given. The volume is as a rule that of the year of the subject's death, but it must be remembered that from 1783 onwards the Magazine appeared in half-yearly volumes. If the obituary is not in the appro? priate volume it will be found in the succeeding one. 1 Most of these are indicated by an asterisk. 33</page><page sequence="2">34 MISCELLANIES IN HONOUR OF E. N.
