Preface Misc 5

<plain_text><page sequence="1">FOREWORD The original intention was to mark the attainment by the late Elkan Nathan Adler of the eightieth anniversary of his birth by the presentation to him of a volume of essays written in his honour by friends and colleagues. The first part of this volume was published in the year 1942, but before it was possible to pass the second part through the press, to the regret of a wide circle Elkan Adler's life ended. The second part which is now presented to the public by the Jewish Historical Society of England is therefore a memorial of one who was in his lifetime one of the most enthusiastic supporters of the Society. One of the founding members of the Society, he was a member of its Council for almost half a century. He served as its President for two terms?1912 to 1914?and a$ a Vice-President from the latter year until his death in September, 1946. For the last forty years of his life he was also the Society's Honorary Legal Adviser. In the small band of students and writers on the History of the Jews in England, Elkan Adler occupied a prominent place. The present volume, Miscellanies Part V, is a continuation of Miscellanies Part IV. The pagination is therefore continuous and there is one index to the two parts. v</page></plain_text>
