JHSE XXIII). Richard Barnett, formerly Keeper of Western Asiat? ic Antiquities at the British Museum, is Honorary Archivist of the Spanish and Portuguese Syna? gogue, Be vis Marks. Steven Bayme is Assistant Professor of History at Yeshiva University, New York. Stuart Cohen, Associate Professor of Political Studies at Bar-Ilan University, was born in London in 1946 and emigrated to Israel after completing his undergraduate and doctoral studies at Oxford. His publications include: British Policy in Mesopotamia, 1903-1914 (Oxford 1976) and English Zionists and British Jews: The Communal Politics of Anglo-Jewry, 1 #95-1920 (Princeton 1982). A. S. Diamond, to whom volume XXVI of the Transactions of the Society was dedicated, died in March 1978. Judge Israel Finestein is a Vice-President of the jhse and a frequent contributor to this publication. H. E. S. Fisher, bsc (Econ.), PhD (Lond.), born in Uckfield in 1930, is Senior Lecturer in Economic History at the University of Exeter. His publications include The Portugal Trade. A Study of Anglo-Portuguese Trade, 1700-1770 (London 19 71) and he edited (with A. R. J. Jufica) Documents in English Economic History. England from 1000 to 1760 (London 1977). David Goldstein, Curator of Hebrew Books and Manuscripts at the British Library, was born in London in 1933. After reading English at Oxford and completing a doctorate in Hebrew Studies at London he was ordained a Liberal Jewish minister in i960. He has published Jewish Poets of Spain and Jewish Folklore and Legend. He is Chairman of Anglo-Jewish Archives and Fellow of the Royal Philatelic Society. Benjamin Jaffe, ma, Mjur (Hebrew University) and Member of the Israel Bar, was born in Jerusalem in 1921. He directed the Department of External Relations, World Zionist Organization (1960-78), has been Research Member of the Institute of Zionist History, University of Tel-Aviv and Depart? mental Editor, Encyclopaedia Judaica. He has pub? lished B. Disraeli (i960) and The British Press and Zionism in Herzl's Time (1979-80). Beth-Zion Lask Abrahams is on the Council of the jhse and has published widely on Jewish subjects. Diana de Marly, ma (Oxon ), cchd (Lond.), studied theatre and television design at the Central School of Art, and costume analysis in art history at the Courtauld Institute. She lectures widely, and has published The History of Haute Couture (London 1980) and Worth, a biography (London 1980). Aubrey Newman, Reader in History at the Univer? sity of Leicester, and former President of the jhse, was born in 1927 and educated in Glasgow (ma 1949) and Oxford (DPhil 1957). His History of the United Synagogue is reviewed in the present volume. Edgar Samuel, born in Hampstead in 1928 and educated in England, Australia and Canada, later qualified as an ophthalmic optician. As a mature student he took a ba in history and an MPhil in economic history at the lse, and has contributed prolifically to this and other publications. vii</page><page sequence="7">viii Contributors to this volume Steven Sharot is Senior Lecturer in the Department of Behavioural Sciences, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. Joan V. Stiebel, mbe, born at Walton-on-Thames in 1911, was Private Secretary to Otto M. Schiff, cbe, 1933-39, through whom she became involved in Jewish work. She was Joint Secretary of Jewish Refugees Committee, Secretary of Jewish Child's Day, Appeal Organizer and, from 1958 to 1979 when she retired, Executive Secretary of Central British Fund for Jewish Relief and Rehabilitation (now Central British Fund for World Jewish Relief). Bernard Wasserstein, Associate Professor and Di? rector of the Tauber Institute, Brandeis University, was formerly Lecturer in History at the University of Sheffield and Research Fellow at Nuffield College.
