I am delighted to share the details of two events coming up in June.
The first takes place on 4 June 2023 at 6pm, the 130th anniversary of the foundation of JHSE by a group of enthusiastic historians - all men - with a vision for the study and understanding of the life of Jews in England. Caroline Gurney, Dean Irwin, David Jacobs, Pinchas Roth and I will share with you insights into that night, where over dinner in a London club, our Society was formed in 1893.
The event will be free for non-members to join, so please use this link and share it widely with friends, family, and colleagues who may be interested.
The second event has been long in the planning, and it will take place on 8 June 2023 at 6pm. It marks our return to the celebration of the life of Richard Barnett through the Richard Barnett Fund/JHSE collaboration over an annual lecture. At last, after a break due to Covid and to the building campaign at the Bevis Marks synagogue, we can gather at this historic venue, and hear about a project Richard Barnett had initiated, the publication of sources related to the operation of he Portuguese inquisition against converted Jews. We will hear from those involved in the project and also from the world expert on the Portuguese Inquisition, Professor Francisco Bethencourt of King's College London. We will also gather over refreshments after the formal section of the event. It will be so nice to meet in person with members, so do sign up!
Looking forward to seeing you online and in person at these events
Best wishes, Miri Rubin, Presdeint of the JHSE
