This international one-day symposium, to be held at V&A South Kensington and online on Tuesday 26 November 2024, explores Jewish stories revealed through the V&A’s rich collections. Following an opening keynote by Professor David Feldman on ‘The Heritage of Jewish Heritage’ are three focussed panels on ‘Jewish Objects’, ‘Jewish Collectors & Donors’ and ‘Jewish Artists’. Taking an object or objects in the V&A’s collection as a starting point, papers will use these to consider the hugely diverse ways in which Jews have shaped the development of the V&A from the middle of the 19th century to now. Featuring speakers working independently and within institutions in the UK, the USA and Vienna, and discussion ranging from Jewish amulets crafted in Renaissance Italy through to twentieth-century fashion designers, these panels will provide a showcase for exciting new research as well as a deeper meditation on how museums present the heritage of marginalised communities more generally.
During the lunchbreak, attendees will have the opportunity to join a session on ‘Jewish Photography in the V&A’, exploring the V&A’s photographic collections guided by curatorial staff and we hope that attendees will join us for a drinks reception following the conference closing panel – a roundtable discussion led by Thomas Marks and featuring Rebecca Abrams, Dr Jacques Schuhmacher and Edmund de Waal.
A full programme and booking for in-person or online attendance can be found at the following link.
The conference is generously sponsored by the Gilbert Trust for the Arts, and is part of a wider collaboration between the V&A and University of Oxford’s AHRC-funded project ‘Jewish Country Houses – Objects, Networks, People’. On the night before the conference the V&A will host the launch of a major book to emerge from this project, Jewish Country Houses. Tickets for this can be purchased here.
