Upcoming Events
NGG Conference 2026
Voice, Narrative, (Self-)Representation
The NGG invites paper proposals for its third annual conference, “Voice, Narrative, and (Self-)Representation”, taking place in person at UCL on Monday 11 May 2026.

The conference asks a core question in Jewish Studies: who gets to speak, who tells the story, and who listens? We welcome 20-minute papers on Jewish voices and representations – by Jews and by others – across periods, places, and media. Topics may include life-writing and testimony; literary and cultural constructions of the “Jewish voice”; portrayals in non-Jewish sources; marginalised voices (e.g. gendered, queer, disabled, Sephardi/Mizrahi); and micro-histories of everyday Jewish life.
Submit by 15 February 2026 to jhse.ngg@gmail.com: a 300-word abstract and a c.100-word bio (name, affiliation if any, and career stage). Decisions by 15 March 2026. We welcome scholars at all career stages; please note any accessibility requirements when submitting.
Regular Events
1 / Work in Progress Seminars
In these sessions, postgraduate and early-career researchers present work that is still in development: a chapter draft, a conference paper, or an early idea for a new project. Presentations can be up to 20 minutes, followed by time for discussion. The aim is to offer supportive feedback, suggestions for reading and sources, and a sense of community around the research process.
Researchers interested in presenting are invited to email a brief abstract and short bio to jhse.ngg@gmail.com. We particularly welcome contributions from those who have not presented in an NGG or JHSE setting before.
2 / Online Writing Retreats
The NGG organises online writing sessions which provide structured time to work on theses, articles, applications, and other projects alongside fellow researchers. Sessions usually begin with a short check-in, followed by quiet writing blocks and short breaks. There is no expectation to share your writing; the focus is on mutual accountability and making progress.
Details of upcoming writing sessions are circulated via the mailing list and posted here. Suggestions for joint writing days, including institution-based retreats, are very welcome.
If you are interested in speaking at one of our WiP seminars or co-hosting a writing retreat with us, please email us at jhse.ngg@gmail.com.
