About the event

Mike Levy explores the life and work of lyricist and composer Stephen Sondheim. From 'Company' to 'Into the Woods' via 'Assassins' and 'Sweeny Todd' - he revolutionised the art of musical theatre. He did this partly by upturning the traditional Broadway 'book musical' and introducing darker themes including the exploration of the human condition. What was it about Sondheim's Jewish background, his turbulent relationship with his mother and the father-figure of Oscar Hammerstein, which drove this restless genius? Mike will illustrate his talk with musical numbers, showing that there is a lot more to Sondheim than a 'A Little Night Music'.

Mike is a researcher, historian, playwright and author of ‘Get the Children Out –Unsung Heroes of the Kindertransport’, about which he spoke to the branch two years ago. He is an accomplished speaker on a wide range of Jewish topics, particularly the Jewish contribution to Musical Theatre in New York over many years.

This event is taking place on Zoom, free to JHSE members. There is a charge of £5 for non-members.

We very much look forward to welcoming you on Zoom for this event.
