About the event

The North London branch, invites you to join them for this in person event with art historian Sophie Lachowsky

Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s depictions of modern life celebrate the sensual pleasures of everyday.

His light-filled paintings capture fleeting moments of love, domestic intimacy and the sociability of dance halls and theatres. They seemingly transcend social, gender and religious divisions.

Behind this warmth of human relationships, lay bitterness and bigotry, including an antisemitism that became particularly hostile during the Dreyfus Affair.

Yet some of Renoir's most exquisite portraits were commissioned by wealthy Jewish patrons, when he was moving away from Impressionism towards more classical, sculptural compositions.

Sophie is an art historian, independent lecturer, and writer, working with leading institutions and private galleries in the culture and heritage sectors.
