About the event

Jewish life in the North East of England has been marginal to both wider Anglo-Jewry and to Britain at large, yet within the overlooked worlds of the Jewish North East, complex webs of identity, connection, and lived experiences challenge our assumptions about Jewish life outside the metropolis.


This talk will introduce the history of North East Jewish communities in the first half of the twentieth century, beyond the synagogues they built, the businesses they set up, and the dignitaries they produced, fundamentally questioning what makes a ‘community’? Drawing from Sophie’s doctoral research, this talk will explore everyday life, from dances at the Maccabi club and squabbles at committee meetings, to regional belonging found on local football terraces, and the sense of purpose cultivated through Jewish organising at times of anti-Semitic violence.
