About the event

In this talk, Dr Frojmovic will discuss how the owners of Medieval Sephardi Haggadah manuscripts wished to see themselves pictured. She will argue that late medieval Sephardi Jews tried to strike a delicate balance between the need to appear pious, the need to show status, and the need to appear different from their Christian neighbours. The place that women and servants occupied in these illustrated manuscripts will turn out to be very important in portraying the Jewish family.

Dr Frojmovic is a medieval art historian with a strong interest in medieval manuscript illumination, cultural diversity, transcultural relationships, intersectionality. I have another strong interest in museology and heritage studies, especially in Jewish Museums. She is the Director of the Centre for Jewish Studies at the University of Leeds, and a leader of research on medieval Jewish visual culture.

The picture is from the Rylands Haggadah, John Rylands University Library, Ms. 6, fol. 19v.
