About the event
Dr Jeremy Smilg will talk on Lewis Goldsmith. Goldsmith was a radical English Jew, who created a newspaper in English in Paris for Talleyrand and became a spy for Napoleon obtaining information covertly on the future Louis XVIII. Subsequently, he returned to England and became a conservative polemicist calling for Napoleon's assassination. Later in his life he moved back to Paris where he worked for The Times, wrote a book on French statistics and collected intelligence for the British government.
Jeremy Smilg studied economics at the London School of Economics and worked for many years in the City. On his escape, he earned a PhD on the reaction of the Jewish community in England to the French revolution.
