About the event
As part of the JHSE President's conversation and lecture series, Professor Gavin Schaffer will be in conversation with Dr. Nathan Abrams to discuss his recent book, Jews in the Welsh Imagination: Medieval Times to the Present.
This talk explores how Wales has imagined and engaged with Jews, Judaism and Israel-Palestine from the medieval to the present. Drawing on the concept of allosemitism- the mix of fascination, admiration and othering that casts Jews as fundamentally distinct - it uncovers Wales's long but often hidden Jewish histories and the symbolic roles Jews have played in Welsh cultural and political life. From medieval allegory and early modern missionary zeal to the influence of Welsh figures like David Lloyd George on the modern Middle East and the contemporary debates on colonialism and self-determination, the talk reveals how ideas about Jews have shaped Welsh identity across the centuries.
