About the event
Before the First World War, Germany was the pre-eminent scientific nation in the world. Jewish scientists had played an important role in achieving this status: about a quarter of all Nobel Prizes awarded to German scientists in the first quarter of the 20th Century were won by scientists of Jewish descent. However, the Nazis’ rise to power led to a mass expulsion of Jewish academics from their universities, many of whom eventually reached Britain. This talk will explore the impact of the Nazis’ racial laws on Jewish academics, and the role played by British scientists – acting alone or in collaboration – in giving refugee scientists a safe haven.
Dr Michael Shaw is a former medical writer with a PhD in physiology from the University of Leeds. Now retired, he retains a keen interest in the history of science and medicine.
