About the event
The Brighton & Hove Hebrew congregation was amongst the earliest congregations outside London to have a burial ground. Opened in 1826 and closed in the 1970s, the ground holds around 530 grave plots. The original ground was presented by Thomas Kemp (of Kemp Town fame), and in the 1890s it was extended northwards (gifted by Brighton Borough Council) and then southwards (through purchase). Through a detailed analysis of the minutes of the congregation from before 1826, together with records from funeral directors, and extracts from contemporary newspapers, this talk will outline the history of the burial ground, the acquisition of the land, and an analysis of the details of those buried there. This talk is based on a forthcoming book marking the 200th anniversary of the cemetery.
