A hybrid event
Time & Location
23 Apr, 20:00
Loughton Synagogue, Borders Lane, Loughton IG10 1TE, UK
About the event
Benjamin Disraeli was one of the most charismatic Prime Ministers of the United Kingdom. He is universally referred to as the first and only ever Jewish Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, even though his father Isaac converted him to Christianity at the age of 12 after a falling out with the leadership of Bevis Marks Synagogue.
Ze’ev Portner’s lecture will discuss whether British Jewry is starting to reassess its relationship with Disraeli by reclaiming him as ‘one of its own,’ his legacy for British Jewry and British politics more generally.
Ze’ev Portner is a Law Lecturer at Buckinghamshire New University and has on numerous occasions visited Hughenden Manor, the former country home of Mr and Mrs Disraeli, which is situated less than 3.5 miles from Buckinghamshire New University. Ze’ev loves history, with his specialist areas of interest being the history of Jews of Barbados and the life and legacy of Benjamin Disraeli.
