DOCUMENTS RELATING TO THE HISTORY OF
THE JEWS IN THE THIRTEENTH CENTURY.
By C. TRICE MARTIN.
The following pages contain copies of a few miscellaneous documents
referring to the Jews of England in the thirteenth century, which I
have happened to come across. Most of them are entries on the Close
Rolls of Henry III., rolls on which were entered the substance of letters
written in the King’s name to individuals, and sent folded up and
sealed with the Great Seal. It will be noticed that the enrolments are
very generally in the third person, but the real letters which were
sent were in the first person plural, and commenced, “Henricus Dei
gratia rex Anglie, dominus Hibernie, dux Normannie et Aquitanie
comes Andegavie,” instead of simply “Rex,” as in the enrolments.
The remainder of the copies are from original letters of the time
of Edward I., still existing in the Public Record Office.
The few words which I have added to each document will give
some idea of their purport.

Asks for respite of a plea of debt against William de Haneleye,
Prior of the Hospitallers in England, by certain Jews.

ANCIENT CORRESPONDENCE. Vol. xxix. No. 107.
super hiis que quosdam iudeos contingunt; vobis supplico affectuose
quium. Valete.
[John Kirkeby to Robert Burnell, Chancellor.]
Hears that certain Jews of London are maliciously accusing Aaron,
son of Vyves of London, chiefly by reason of his advice given to the
writer and his colleagues for the King’s benefit in matters concerning
the said Jews. Desires him to prevent these accusations being heard
in court until they have spoken together.
ANCIENT CORRESPONDENCE. Vol. xxix. No. 108.
Valete.

58. [The same to the same.]
Asks him to procure a writ for the payment of at least 10l. to
Elyas of Hertford, a remembrancer of the Exchequer, who has long
served [Edward I.] and his father in collecting the Twentieth, and in
the scrutiny of the Jews’ chests at London, and other business, and is
as yet unpaid.1

writer or receiver, commencing as these do. Some are doubtless from Kirkeby to
Burnell, others are to Kirkeby from various correspondents.
